Hey 🙂
I was doing my weekly 3-1-3 this morning and I ended up spending way more time than usual thinking about something uncomfortable.
Not about the business. About me.
Specifically: what’s the thing I’m resisting? The weak spot, the gap, the bit of self-awareness I keep avoiding because looking at it straight on is uncomfortable. Whatever that thing is for you, it’s probably a bigger leading indicator for the business than most of the stuff on your to-do list.
Individual growth drives business growth.
I’m noticing my own tendency to stay in my comfort zone in certain areas. It’s a fear response to doing something new and unknown. It shows up as doing the things I know I’m good at, the things with predictable outcomes, the stuff that feels productive because it’s easy.
Nothing wrong with that, by the way — if you’re happy where you are. But if you’ve got bigger ambitions, stuff you haven’t done before, then staying comfortable and wanting something bigger or better is a straight-up contradiction. You can’t have both.
So how do you actually break out of it?
For me, it’s this: pick projects that requires personal and professional courage. A project where you know saying yes means you have to change to see it through. To commit to something that requires you to be someone different.
This doesn’t mean you have to do it alone: get a coach, join a program, ask for help (I’ve got several coaches and programs for the projects I’m working on).
And that tension you feel in the meantime, between where you are and where you want to be? That’s not a sign something’s wrong. That’s just what growth feels like while it’s happening.
So here’s what I want to leave you with this weekend…
No pressure to have answers. Just sit with these over the next couple of days. Let them percolate a bit. Maybe jot a few thoughts down in your journal if something comes up.
- What’s a weakness, gap, or blind spot you’ve been resisting — one that, if you actually worked on it, could genuinely move things forward for you or your business?
- Where in your work or life are you staying in your comfort zone? And is that a genuine preference, or is it fear of the unknown?
- What’s the one project you could say yes to that would require courage — the kind of yes that forces you to change who you are?
There’s no right answer here. Just an invitation to be honest with yourself.
